Why we exist
The Demand for Proven Innovation in Pilot Training
The importance of innovation in all commercial sectors is indisputable. Today, companies that fail to innovate quickly fail, but this can pose a significant hurdle within industries like aviation that have very low risk tolerances.
The answer to this challenge is to seek out and implement proven innovations. These may be recent advancements that have already been approved for aviation, relevant developments that have been trialed, tested and proven within related fields, or else innovations that have been shown to be effective within other spheres like the military. As it relates to pilot training, recent exciting innovations have been proven in several areas that we believe commercial flight training programs can strongly benefit from.
The latest developments in traditional and non-traditional flight simulators, targeted cognitive training devices, physiological and biofeedback tools, artificial intelligence, modern and efficient aircraft, advanced high-quality courseware, and interconnected learning management systems, all hold the potential to dramatically improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of pilot training.
The purpose of CTS is to determine which already proven innovations are best suited for aircrew training, and to work with our partners and regulators to develop and prove other innovations that hold the most promise. From here, we then work to make these technologies, tools, and principles available to flight academies, as affordably and flexibly as possible.
Innovation is hard. We’re here to help.
About Us
Our Vision
“The broadest possible adoption of proven innovation in flight training.”
Our Mission
“We will help flight academies to incorporate proven innovations that are the most suitable for their program, as flexibly and affordably as possible.”
Our holistic approach is what makes CTS different
- We believe training aircrew attitudes is as important as training aircrew skills.
- We believe that developing instructors is as important as developing students.
- We believe in early adoption and heavy use of proven technological innovations.
- We partner with airlines to understand their needs and better serve them.
- We do not believe that everyone should pass.
Team
CTS is a team of aviation experts, established under the leadership of Garrett Lawless.
Garrett Lawless:
Garrett has over 25 years’ experience in aerospace operations, training and executive leadership. After serving 22 years with the RCAF as a pilot, he became President of a Canadian regional airline and later founded two aerospace companies focussed on leasing and training. Garrett has two Master’s degrees from the Royal Military College of Canada, as well as a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering.

Aircraft Leasing
Often the factor preventing flight academies from reaching their potential is access to good quality, modern training aircraft.
We offer fair and transparent lease agreements with fixed monthly payments.
This supports our partner schools’ business planning and allows them to retain more profits than with typical lease agreements.
Traditional (FTD) Simulators
A high-quality modern flight simulator, when properly used, can offer students much more effective training than actual aircraft.
These devices enable students to train for challenging weather conditions, compound emergencies, and also to work as crew with other students of similar experience levels, while the instructor acts from a distance. They also make training possible at all times of the day, no matter what the real weather is like outside.
Unfortunately, many schools cannot afford a proper flight simulator, so we work with them to place these devices within their operations in a way that makes the most sense in terms of their profitability and flexibility.
Non-Traditional (Virtual and Mixed Reality) Simulators
Recently, the USAF and other military flight training organizations have shown that VR and MR environments may represent the future of commercial pilot training.
These devices offer exceptional realism, immersion and joint training opportunities that in many ways surpass what is possible in actual aircraft. Indeed, many of the largest flight simulator manufacturers are investing heavily into developing technologies in this area, and so are we.
The difference is that our focus is to deliver the best product possible at a price point that is realistic for a normal flight school.
Targeted Cognitive Training
Recent advances in military flight training have shown how the cognitive capabilities of student aircrew can be directly selected for and trained.
Through our exclusive partnership with NeuroTracker, we offer the ability to train Situational Awareness, Mental Endurance and Emotional Resilience in a manner that is proven to rapidly develop the mental skills required for advanced air operations.
NeuroTracker is already used by many elite military and professional sports teams, and we are proud to make it affordably available to flight schools.
Training & Other Consulting Services
Competency-based Training and Assessment (CBTA)
National and global aerospace regulators are preparing to qualify select flight training academies to deliver CBTA based programs. This will place an enormous amount of responsibility on these schools to develop, implement and maintain strict operational standards and quality assurance programs.
For organizations that are interested in achieving Approved Training Organization (ATO) status, we can work with you to ensure that your existing processes evolve appropriately to gain this advantage.
Working with Authorities and Regulators
Our team has extensive experience working with aerospace regulators, and we are able to lend this experience to you whenever you may need to qualify new courses, aircraft, simulators or other devices to support your training programs.
We are able to work with you from application to approval, or else to just help you through some of the more difficult stages of the process.
Training Programs
We design iATPL. MPL and MCC and other specialized aviation training courses that meet existing regulatory criteria, or else which are specifically designed to support CBTA principles, should you achieve ATO status.
We also design basic, advanced and operational aircrew training programs, which meet military standards, in areas including Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, Maritime Patrol (MP) and Search and Rescue (SAR).
Instructor Support
One major challenge of the global pilot shortage is the high turnover rates of flight instructors.
To mitigate against this challenge, we provide intensive instructor training and can provision your school with robust Flight Instructor Guides and detailed Mission Profiles, so that all students can receive the same training, and the same quality of instruction, no matter who or how junior their instructor is.
Major and Government Procurement
For organizations that have never bid on major or government procurement opportunities before, the processes and paperwork involved can be daunting.
Sometimes, even navigating the system to become aware of and find the right opportunity to meet your capabilities can be a struggle.
Our team has extensive experience in these areas and can help introduce you to this profitable domain.
Industrial Technological Benefits (ITB)
Whenever Canada offers contracts with our Defence or Coast Guard organizations that are worth more than $20M, Prime Contractors must present a Value Proposition that proves an equivalent sum of money is being invested or spent within targeted sectors of the Canadian economy.
Whether you are a company that needs to build your ITB credits, or you hope to engage with a company that might earn ITB credits from working with you, our team has the experience to help.
